Call for Papers: Protest and the New Media Ecology
Much has been made of the relationship between new media and the various
protest movements that have been witnessed in recent years: from Iran to
Egypt, from G8 protests to the Occupy movement, and beyond.
The protests we have seen range from the local to the global, from the
social to the political and from the personal to the societal. Some use
information technologies and new media as their sole means of
communication; others use them as one of many communication channels.
Some require physical participation and others the click of a mouse.
Abstracts for papers that consider the relationship between protest and
new media are invited from postgraduate students and early career
researchers across the humanities and social sciences. Abstracts should
be no more than 250 words for papers between 6,000 and 8,000 words.
Accepted papers will be published in a special guest-edited issue of
Networking Knowledge: Journal of the MeCCSA-PGN.
Possible topics might include but are not limited to:
• Political protest in the new media ecology
• Social protest in the new media ecology
• Global/Local protest: Is the classification still relevant?
• Methods, challenges and opportunities in researching protest and the
new media ecology
• Reporting protest in the new media ecology
• New and old media: does the dichotomy exist?
• Representation of protestors in the new media ecology
• Does protest make a difference?
Abstracts should be sent to the issue’s guest editor, Keren Darmon, at
(k.n.darmon /at/ lse.ac.uk) by January 4, 2013. Deadline for submission of
selected articles will be May 1, 2013.
For enquiries please contact either Keren or the journal’s general
editor, Matthew Freeman, at (aaxmaf /at/ nottingham.ac.uk)
