Intellect is delighted to announce the publication of /The Poster /issue 2.1

This issue discusses how visual rhetoric is employed by elite institutions in an attempt to exert control, but also demonstrates that it can be harnessed for a politics of resistance. Exposing the unsavoury nature of 'imperatives in the cultural environment', Barnabas Wetton explores the patriarchal values underlying slogans such as 'Drink Coca-Cola'. Furthermore, Anna Feigenbaum describes how the contemporary security industry consciously promotes fear by means of its advertising in order to sell anti-terrorism products. Highlighting one way in which visual art may be used to resist oppression, Bex Lewis examines the history of the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' poster, which the Ministry of Information intended to post in the event of a Nazi invasion during WWII to prevent panic. Lizzie Falvey articulates a narrative of defiance in her case study of American populist landscape artist Bob Ross, which exposes how participatory culture can challenge elitist notions of 'high art'. Exiled Iranian visual commentator Hesam Fetrati showcases his bold, satirical work, 'Drawing Dictatorship', on the overwhelming political control enforced in his native country.
