Assistant Professor of Cultural-Critical Rhetoric



The Program in Speech Communication & Rhetoric at the University of 
South Carolina seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar of 
cultural-critical rhetoric at the rank of Assistant Professor.



For this appointment, beginning in August 2013, applicants should have 
significant and dedicated training in the history and theory of 
rhetoric, along with interest and expertise in one or more of the 
following subfields: cultural studies, aesthetics, critical theory, 
critical performance studies, legal rhetoric, feminist rhetorical 
theory, critical race discourse, and/or the rhetoric of transnational 
and global culture.



Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated ability both to expand the 
Program’s research profile and to complement its current strengths in 
rhetorical theory, critical social theory, the philosophy of rhetoric, 
international discourse, public advocacy, rhetoric and technology, 
performance theory and criticism, and/or communication ethics.



Faculty members in the Speech Communication & Rhetoric Program enjoy a 
favorable undergraduate and graduate teaching load and are eligible for

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to make contributions 
to the biennial USC Conference on Rhetorical Theory and the USC 
initiative on Social Advocacy & Ethical Life. The Program in Speech 
Communication & Rhetoric at the University of South Carolina is closely 
and deliberately aligned with the Department of English. As it seeks to 
build substantive bridges between various interpretations of rhetorical 
and communicative inquiry, the Speech Communication & Rhetoric faculty 
is committed to rigorous interdisciplinary scholarship and close 
collaboration with the faculty in Rhetoric & Composition. Ideal 
candidates will have an interest and capacity to make substantive 
contributions to this mission.



Applicants for the position must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment 
(August 2013) and must demonstrate excellence or clear potential for 
excellence in scholarship and teaching in their areas of expertise.

Associate Professor of Public Advocacy and Political Rhetoric



The Program in Speech Communication & Rhetoric at the University of 
South Carolina seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar of Public 
Advocacy and Political Rhetoric at the rank of Associate Professor.



For this appointment, beginning in August 2013, applicants should have 
significant training and demonstrated expertise in rhetorical theory, 
public advocacy and argumentation, and critical/qualitative approaches 
to the study of political discourse. Individuals who can supplement 
these basic qualifications with expertise in one or more of the 
following areas are particularly encouraged to apply: citizenship, 
institutional argumentation, civil society discourse, social movements 
and new media, psychoanalysis, classical and contemporary political 
theory, and/or post-colonial politics.



The ideal candidate for this appointment will have an expressed interest 
in playing a leading role in the University of South Carolina’s 
Initiative on Social Advocacy & Ethical Life. Launched in 2011, this 
initiative promotes research and teaching addressed to the relationship 
between spoken and written discourse practices, the development of moral 
systems, and frameworks of ethical action. Working well beyond the idea 
of ‘civic engagement’ and committed to cross-disciplinary liberal arts 
inquiry, the Social Advocacy & Ethical Life Initiative includes a 
groundbreaking General Education course, a well-funded annual doctoral 
fellowship competition, and a university lecture series.



Well qualified applicants will have an evident ability both to expand 
the Speech Communication & Rhetoric Program’s research profile and to 
complement its current strengths in rhetorical theory, critical social 
theory and the philosophy of rhetoric, international discourse, public 
advocacy, rhetoric and technology, performance theory and criticism, and 
communication ethics.



Applicants for the position should hold credentials and experience that 
warrant appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, including a Ph.D 
and a nationally-recognized research program, a record of significant 
and consistent publication, and excellent teaching skills.
