Job Description
Purpose / Objectives
To be responsible to the Subject Manager/Assistant Subject Manager of the Film and Media and Creative and Professional Writing Subject Group for Lecturer/Senior Lecturer duties in the context of the School of Humanities, part of the Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology. You will join a lively and creative team, to undertake teaching and student learning and support on a contemporary multi platform journalism programme, initially at undergraduate level. You will have excellent organisational skills and be interested in working across traditional discipline boundaries. Experience in curriculum development would be an advantage. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the research and/or publications profile of the team and to develop professional links and enterprise initiatives. We are seeking to appoint someone with a wide-ranging knowledge of journalism and considerable current experience as a practicing journalist. An in depth academic knowledge and understanding of current debates within the field is required, along with a commitment to teaching theory and practice in an exciting and innovative way, with the student experience as the central focus. You will be able to deliver teaching in one or more of the following areas – TV News, Radio News, Online News and ideally have expertise in one of the following areas: International journalism, Political Journalism, Investigative Journalism or History of Journalism.
Principal Accountabilities
1. To contribute to the teaching, assessment and quality management of the course in line with University systems and procedures. 2. To contribute to the staff team, working closely with them to maintain and enhance student satisfaction with all aspects of the learning experience. 3. To undertake teaching duties as appropriate to your areas of expertise. 4. To ensure the successful delivery of the course through the effective management of resources made available including liaison with technical support staff and associate lecturers. 5. To show continued interest in the pedagogy of Journalism education and ensure that this is reflected in the teaching and learning methods employed on the course. 6. To take a proactive role both internally and externally in promoting and marketing the programme. 7. To undertake research, professional practice and scholarly activity relevant to the subject ensuring you maintain your level of subject expertise. 8. To enhance the reputation of the course by maintaining and extending professional and academic links both internally and externally, and at national and international level. 9. To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post. 10. You will be required to work closely with: Subject Manager for Film and Media with Creative and Professional Writing and the Assistant Subject Manager, Programme Team, Faculty Curriculum Development Manager, Student Liaison Officer, Faculty Office and Technical Support staff in meeting your responsibilities. 11. To undertake any other responsibilities as required by the Subject Manager/Assistant Subject Manager, Head of School or Dean of Faculty.

Qualifications
· A good undergraduate degree in Journalism or related discipline - Essential · A postgraduate degree in Journalism or related discipline - Desirable · A relevant teaching qualification or willingness to undertake such a qualification - Desirable
Skills and Abilities
· Evidence of ability to enthuse students and raise their ambitions, motivating them to think analytically and critically as Journalists. - Essential · Evidence of ability to write and present effectively, manage resources, keep records and report on annual monitoring - Essential · Evidence of good networking skills and knowledge of the Journalism industry at regional, national or international level - Essential · Experience of the range of skills involved in multi platform production - Essential · Ability to operate and teach a range of production software (CS6, Adobe Audition, Final Cut Pro X, Joomla) and equipment (cameras, portable recorders, studio operation). - Essential · Experience of the range of skills involved in Online Journalism - Essential · An ability to be forward thinking with regards to advances in multimedia - Desirable
Experience and Knowledge
· A thorough understanding of multi platform news production - Essential · Experience of Teaching in Higher Education with experience of assessment processes and procedures in Higher Education - Essential · On-going professional practice, academic research or industry experience - Essential · Knowledge of work based learning and work placement activities - Desirable · Experience of curriculum development and design - Desirable · Involvement with external projects and international markets - Desirable · Specialist expertise in international, investigative or political journalism - Desirable

Work Pattern
18.5 hours per week, days to be confirmed.
Benefits
Potential for further salary progression based on performance, once in post, up to £55,908 per annum, pro rata.

Pro rata to 35 days holiday plus statutory, concessionary and closure days.

Staff appointed to a teaching post should hold a suitable teaching qualification or have relevant, recent teaching experience. This will normally be interpreted as having at least two years teaching experience in further or higher education. The expectation will be that the individual will be (or will become) a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or has gained (or is working towards) an award from the HEA accredited course or some other recognised teaching award acceptable to the University. You will be expected to commence this programme within your first year of appointment and successfully complete within 18 months of starting the programme.
