[ecrea] Cine-Excess VI Conference: Transglobal Excess: The Art and Atrocity of Cult Adaptation

/Cine Excess VI/, the annual international conference and film festival 
on global cult film, returns to London on 24^th – 26^th May. The theme 
is ‘Transglobal Excess: The Art and Atrocity of Cult Adaptation’, with 
international delegates discussing related topics, and the event is 
organised in conjunction with the Italian Cultural Institute, London. An 
accompanying series of lectures and screenings takes place at both the 
Odeon Covent Garden and Italian Cultural Institute over the three-days 
of the event.

/Cine-Excess IV /focuses on global adaptations of cult narratives, 
genres, themes and icons across a broad range of media and fiction 
formats. From pulp novels into pulp horror films and recent big budget 
blockbuster remakes of marginal midnight movies, to nationally defined 
interpretations of the pre-established extreme, the cult image remains a 
fascinating index of adaptation, whose wide array of remakes, renditions 
and realisations frequently reveals fascinating issues of nation and 
narrative, as well cultural, regional and historical distinction.

Special guests of honour who will be in attendance include director and 
Tarantino influence **Enzo* G. Castellari* (/Inglorious Bastards, 
Keoma/, /Bronx Warriors/), alongside iconic European filmmaker *Sergio 
Martino* (/Torso/, /The Violent Professionals/, /Mountain of the 
Cannibal God/), both of whom have used themes and national traditions of 
cult adaptation in their extensive back-catalogues. Both directors will 
take part in onstage talks looking at their respective careers, where 
they will also be presented with /Cine-Excess/ Lifetime Achievement 
awards. Both Castellari and Martino will also take part in a special 
panel discussion on Italian exploitation cinema – ‘The Years With(out) 
Lead: Bodies, Bullets and the 1970s Italian Extreme’ - which is chaired 
by Birkbeck College’s Emeritus Professor Mary P. Wood.

For the first time, /Cine-Excess VI/ is also running a unique 
partnership with /Time Out/ Magazine, who will be hosting the special 
panel discussion ‘ Script to Scream: The Art of Cult Adaptation’ on 
24^th May. Chaired by /Time Out’s/ Tom Huddleston, the debate will also 
announce the winner of horror movie pitch competition that was open to 
both students and general readers of the magazine. Kim Henkel, 
screenwriter of /The Texas Chain Saw Massacre/ and /Death Trap/ judged 
the contest, and the results of the will be discussed by a panel of 
filmmakers and horror writers that includes Enzo G. Castellari, Sergio 
Martino, UK director Julian Richards, American producer Robert Weinbach 
and horror novelist Frazer Lee.

Following the /Time Out/ discussion, /Cine-Excess VI/ presents two UK 
theatrical premieres also related to the cult adaptation theme. These 
include the terrifying new CCTV horror movie /Closed Circuit Extreme 
(2011/), directed by novelist Giorgio Amato. The film follows a group of 
teenagers who conceal webcams in the home of a suspected murderer, and 
uses innovative camera techniques to elevate ‘mockumentary horror’ to 
dazzling new levels of innovation. The film is released by Dania Films, 
owned by Sergio Martino’s brother.

Another UK premiere at /Cine-Excess VI/ is Julian Richards’ latest 
serial killer movie /Shiver/ (2011), based on the best seller by Brian 
Harper and starring Danielle Harris (/Halloween///Halloween II/), Casper 
Van Dien (//Starship/ Troopers/) and John Jarrett (/Wolf Creek/), which 
will be introduced by the director himself. As well as special 
retrospective screenings of Castellari and Martino movies, /Cine-Excess 
VI/ is also hosting a special cult adaptation screening of 
Mario Andreacchio’s rare ‘female vengeance film’ /Fair Game (1986), 
/which Quentin Tarantino describes as one of his favourite 
‘Ozploitation’ films/./
