[ecrea] European Media Policy No. 1, 2012
Fri May 11 00:04:49 GMT 2012
Welcome to European Media Policy, a newsletter from NORDICOM providing an up-date on policy developments at the European level.
The No. 1, 2012 issue gives an overview of some main media questions discussed during the last months:
- The signing of the ACTA agreement sparked widespread protests in Europe. Now many in the European Parliament don't want to approve it.
- ISPs and social networks cannot be forced to install a general filtering sytem to prevent illegal downloads, says the EU Court of Justice in two recent rulings.
- The Commission has proposed a reform of the EU's data protection rules. If approved, people will have easier access to their own data, a "right to be forgotten" and be able to delete their data if there are no legitimate grounds for retaining it.
- More and more people are saying that Internet freedom is a human right, including policymakers who have brought up the issue on several occasions in recent months.
- Many are wary about the increasing power of search engines and social networks and call for regulation. The Council of Europe adopted two Recommendations on this issue.
