A position as Associate Professor in Media Studies is open at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.

The Department of Information Science and Media Studies was established in 2004 in a merger between Department of Information Science and Department of Media Studies. The Department is the largest at the Faculty of Social Sciences, with 800 students, 48 academic staff (including ph.d. candidates and post doctors), and 16 administrative and technical staff. The Department offers BA and MA programs in Information Science and in Media Studies, and BA programs in Journalism, New media, and Film- and Television Production, and participate in interdisciplinary programs as ICT, Cognitive Science, and Rhetoric.

The department’s research profile is based on the realisation that the two diverse research areas of information science and media studies have much to offer one another in the study of new media technologies and processes of digitization. At the same time, the two traditions need to be maintained in their own right. Media research at the department is partly based in a humanistic interpretive tradition emphasising historical-critical studies, and partly in theories and methodologies central to the social sciences. Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree in media studies or equivalent. He or she must document competence in the humanistic as well as the social- and cultural traditions in media studies. Merits of international publication and plans for future research and publication are required. The position will have a special responsibility to teach and lead our BA program in Film and Television production. In addition, he or she is expected to teach subjects as film and television at the media studies programs.

Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on pedagogical qualifications, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, and experience from supervising students, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The development of teaching material will be considered.

Administrative experience and ability to disseminate research to a non-academic audience and participate in public debates will be considered. Ability to cooperate with students and staff shall be emphasized.

The teaching language is Norwegian and English. It is assumed that newly-employed staff in academic positions, who do not already master a Scandinavian language, are able to obtain, within two years, knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Communications. The University provides such courses.

Basic teaching training is a requirement. The appointee to this position will be offered appropriate pedagogical training if this requirement has not been met previous to appointment.

- Salary for associate professors starts at level 57 (code 1011/LR24.1) of the civil service pay scale; currently NOK 456.100 gross, from which 2% amount an obligatory pension contribution will be deducted. In the case of particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
