National Conference on Community Radio: Prospects and Challenges, 16 &=20

17 March, 2012.
Department of Communication, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University,=20
Tirunelveli=E2=80=93 12, Tamil Nadu

Development communication generally refers to the planned use of=20
strategies and process of communications aimed at achieving=20
development. Community media are media to which members of the=20
community has access, for information, education and entertainment,=20
when they need access. They are media in which the community=20
participates, as planners, producers and performers. They are the means=20
of expression of the community, rather than for the community. Since=20
the inception of the community radio, it has gained momentum in Indian=20
scenario. The interventions of civil societies have invigorated the use=20
of community media as an effective medium to foster the development=20
progress. Community, alternative, citizens' and civil society-based=20
communication practices challenge one-way top-down communication=20
models. The success of any development initiative is assessed with=20
participation of the community as its key factor. Community media=20
initiatives are aimed at making the community people participate from=20
the conception of the project. Hence these community media initiatives=20
had carved anew space after the air waves was made free for the civil=20
societies. Still the challenges of the community media lie in the=20
participation of the community which has its own impact on the=20
sustainability of the project. At this juncture it would be meaningful=20
to discuss about empowerment, participation, locality and development=20
in community and alternative media, and how should such concepts be=20
reviewed and re-thought. Papers should provide the best practices in=20
community media across India and new concepts and approaches, offering=20
innovative proposals on how to assess and evaluate these practices. The=20
conference will cover issues related to the theme. But papers can be on=20
the following themes:
