Thu Feb 02 21:47:05 GMT 2012

2-DAY PHD COURSE IN MEDIATIZATION - SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CHANGE (4 ETCS)

TIME AND PLACE:

April 26th (10:00- 16:00) – 27th (9:00- 15:00), 2012 at Lillehammer University College, Norway (travel grant available).

Mediatization has become a key concept in media and communication research, and is by some scholars regarded as one of the four metaprocesses that shapes modernity along with globalization, individualization and commercialization. In general, the concept focuses on how media - in our increasingly media saturated society - intervenes in, changes and sometimes substitutes social institutions. Mediatization challenges traditional theories of media effects or impacts by taking richly contextualized, historical processes as the point of departure. Its ambition is to explore and increase our understanding of how media transform family life, education, professions, politics, religion and other significant areas of social existence.

The aim of the PhD course is to clarify the meaning of the concept, discuss its potential for renewing media research as well as other research areas, and present empirical research that illuminates the functionality of the concept.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

Stig Hjarvard, Ph.D., Professor and Vice-Chair, Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, University of Copenhagen. He has published books and articles on media history, journalism, globalization, ratings analysis, media and religion, and mediatization theory. He is editor-in-chief editor of Northern Lights. Recent publications in English include "The Mediatization of Society" (Nordicom Review, 2008), "The Production of News" (in Handbook of Media and Communication Research, K.B.Jensen (ed.), Routledge, 2011), and "The Mediatization of Religion: Theorising Religion, Media, and Social change" (Culture and Religion, 2011). Hjarvard is the head of the major research project Mediatization of Culture: The Challenge of New Media (http://mediatization.ku.dk/).

Andreas Hepp, Dr., Professor, Faculty of Cultural Studies, University of Bremen. His main research areas are media and communication theory, media sociology, transnational and transcultural communication, cultural studies, media change, methods of media culture research, and everyday appropriation of television. He is involved in numerous research projects, including the priority program "Mediatized worlds", and is (co-)author of eight books and more than 100 articles in journals and edited volumes. His book “Medienkultur” will soon be published in an English translation titled “Cultures of Mediatization” (Polity Press).

Andreas Hepp and Stig Hjarvard are chair and vice chair for the ECREA Mediatization Temporary Working Group (www.ecrea.eu/divisions/twg/id/21), which aims to bring the European mediatization research together and to stimulate an open, rich and informed exchange on theoretical and empirical questions of mediatization.
