CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

ADVANCED METHODOLOGIES FOR COMMUNICATION STUDIES

1ST SPRING SCHOOL CECC‐FCH‐UCP

LISBON, 10TH TO 14TH APRIL

Organizers: Rita Figueiras, Verónica Policarpo

«There are times in life when the question of knowing if one can think
differently than one thinks, and perceive differently than one sees,
is absolutely necessary if one is to go on looking and reflecting at
all.»

These lines of Michel Foucault, in his introduction to the second
volume of his History of Sexuality, inspire the core concept of the
First Spring School in Advanced Methodologies for Communication
Studies, organized by the research line “Media, Technology, Contexts”
of the Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC), Catholic
University of Portugal. As social phenomena seem to grow in complexity
in the mediated world western societies live in, social scientists are
invited to reinvent their methodological approaches, defying
restrictive views on disciplinary boundaries.

Aiming to discuss the most advanced approaches on research methods and
techniques for studying communication issues, the Spring School
aspires to be a space of inception of new ideas on how to imagine
creative methodologies, as well as how to develop the inheritance of
classic ones to the study of emergent and complex phenomena.

This Spring School seeks to address questions concerning both the
multiple dimensions of communication methodologies at the intersection
of culture and communication, and the innovative methods for designing
communication research objects of analysis. This will be done through
an intensive five days course, which will include a two‐hour
theoretical session during the morning, a two‐hour hands‐on session in
the afternoon, and a workshop in the end of the day, where students
can discuss their own work in progress papers with specialists.

Thematic sessions:

· New Communication Theory – Ciro Marcondes Filho (University
of São Paulo, Brazil)

· Bridging boundaries: “old methodologies”, new insights –
Álvaro Pires (University of Ottawa,Canada)

· Visual Methodologies – Gillian Rose (The Open University,
United Kingdom)

· Understanding Media as Practice – Nick Couldry (Goldsmiths,
University of London, United Kingdom)

· Social Media Network Analysis – to be designated

· Qualitative materials: rediscovering categorical analysis –
Rosalina Costa (University of Évora, Portugal)
