[ecrea] CfP: New Models of Innovation for Development – Manchester International Workshop and Special Issue

Sat Nov 17 07:22:38 GMT 2012

*Call for Papers – International Workshop and Journal Special Issue:*

*“New Models of Innovation for Development”*

Thursday 4 July 2013, University of Manchester, UK****

** **

This is a call for papers for a forthcoming Centre for Development
Informatics collaborative workshop on new models of innovation for
development, with a particular interest in ICT-related innovation and an
initial deadline for abstracts of 11 January 2013.****

** **

Innovation has been moving up the development agenda of government and
international agencies in recent years. Multinationals and other large
organisations have been working to deliver innovative goods and services
for base-of-the-pyramid consumers: the c.3 billion who live on less than
US$2 per day. Within poor communities, an influx of new technology,
finance and capabilities has spurred more localised innovation.****

** **

Thus – notwithstanding decades of interest in the role of innovation in
socio-economic development – there is a sense of something new. New
markets for innovative goods and services among those at the base of the
pyramid, and new technologies – particularly information and communication
technologies – are inducing and enabling new actors to become involved in
innovation for development. This is creating new contexts and new
locations for innovation. And, as a result, new models of innovation are
emerging.****

** **

This workshop aims to share and explore some of these new models for which
a variety of labels have emerged: “Pro-poor innovation”, “BoP innovation”,
“Inclusive innovation”, “Below-the-radar innovation”, “Grassroots
innovation”, “Frugal innovation”, “Jugaad innovation”, and more.****

** **

We welcome papers that help to conceptualise, analyse and critique current
practice including:****

**· **Innovation models for large firms serving BoP markets,
including the role of innovation intermediaries****

**· **Innovation models within capability-rich settings
(incubators, science parks, hubs, university spin-offs, etc) addressing
socio-economic development needs****

**· **Innovation models within micro- and small enterprises which
draw from or serve poor communities****

**· **Citizen innovation models within poor communities****

**· **Innovation models within the development sector; including
the international, governmental and NGO agencies that directly address the
needs of the poor****

**· **Wider implications of new innovation models including
scaling-up, impact, policy implications, and resource requirements****

** **

The following timeline will be observed:****

** **
