Wed Aug 08 17:27:55 GMT 2012

Marilyn Monroe
Cinema, history and imagery

Conference curated by Silvio Alovisio, Giulia Carluccio and Mariapaola Pierini

Call for papers

This conference is part of a larger event, Miti d’oggi: l’immagine di
Marilyn [Myths of Today: Marilyn's Image], organized by Università
degli Studi di Torino – Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici (Centro
Ricerche Attore e Divismo), in cooperation with Fondazione CRT, Museo
Nazionale del Cinema, Teatro Stabile di Torino and Università degli
Studi di Pavia.

The event will take place between October 2012 and January 2013 and
will act as a laboratory. The event will feature formative sessions
within the University, exhibitions, film screenings, theater
performances and will culminate with this conference.

The conference will address the case of Marilyn Monroe, both as a
phenomenon pertaining to cinema – in relation to its relevance within
the studies of acting and stardom – and as one of the most persistent
and multi-faceted icons of the XX Century. An icon often standing at
the crossroad of historical and social dynamics, whose relevance can
still be found today in discourses, images, narrations and phenomena
of fandom, between high culture and popular imagery.
The conference will be held in Torino on November 20t and 21s, 2012
and will feature three sessions. Some proposed perspectives are:

- Marilyn and cultural studies: gender, stardom, fandom
- Marilyn and American cinema, between genres and auteurs
- Marilyn star/actress: production, style, acting, performance
- The imaginary Marilyn, between art and photography
- Narrating Marilyn: biographies, the autobiography, poetry and literature
- Marilyn's history: the historical and political context.

Presentations must be 25 minutes long and proposals, complete with a
short abstract, must be sent by September 15, 2012.
Submissions can be sent to Centro Ricerche Attore e Divismo:
