[ecrea] Journal of Scandinavian Cinemas issue 2.1 now available
Thu May 31 23:06:14 GMT 2012
Now available from Intellect – /Journal of Scandinavian Cinema/, issue 2.1
Exploring and illuminating both culture-wide cinema and the
filmmaking of its constituent nations, this new issue of the
/Journal of Scandinavian Cinema/ (JSCA) presents research and debate
on a compelling array of topics. Pairing incisive ‘short subjects’
alongside more in depth ‘feature articles’, JSCA lends a whole new
dimension to the understanding of film in this distinctive region.
This issue opens with a portrait of the enigmatic Danish actress
Asta Nielson, examining the difficulties she faced as a result of
her success both at home and in Germany, and drawing parallels to
the political and economic situation of the late 1910s and early
1920s. Meanwhile, in ‘Asta’s Ink: The Stockholm Letters’, we explore
the intriguing ways and ends to which Nielson used open letters to
the Swedish press, and what this displays about her outlook on the
changing cinematic culture of the period. Isak Thorsen also reveals
a great deal about contemporary opinion of the film industry through
his reading of a 1916 memo from the then General Manager of Nordisk
Film, Ole Olsen.
Taking a more stylistic approach, Jørgen Bruhn and Anne Gjelsvik
examine the role of photography in the work of Swedish auteur, Jan
Troell, posing valuable questions about the ways in which cinema and
photography interlink. Torben Grodal also explores the static and
‘frozen’ aspects of film in his analysis of the work of
controversial director Lars Von Trier, using cognitive psychology to
distinguish the ways in which Trier’s prologues evoke anxiety and
panic in the viewer. Meanwhile, in a look at the representation of
wider social themes in Scandinavian cinema, Sofia Sjö dissects the
diverse ways in which religion has been addressed in five prominent
films over the last decade, whilst Sanna Kivimäki examines how
gender and poverty are articulated in the films of Finnish director
Aki Kaurismäki’s /Workers’ Trilogy/.
