"Curating as a field of study often falls between the cracks of disciplinary boundaries. Until recently, it has been left to curators themselves to theorize upon their practice and the function of exhibitions. The Journal of Curatorial Studies builds upon the pioneering contributions of curators to encourage in-depth investigations from an array of disciplines. The Journal of Curatorial Studies is an international, peer-reviewed publication that explores the cultural functioning of curating and its relation to exhibitions, institutions, audiences, aesthetics and display culture. Curating has evolved considerably from the connoisseurship model of arranging objects to now encompass performative, virtual and interventionist strategies. While curating as a spatialized discourse of art objects remains important, the expanded cultural practice of curating not only produces exhibitions for audiences to view, but also plays a catalytic role in redefining aesthetic experience, framing cultural conditions in institutions and communities, and inquiring into constructions of knowledge and ideology.

The first issue contains exciting work from an impressive list of contributors including Leigh Markopoulos, Rebecca Uchill, John Potvin, Myron M. Beasley and Ben Cranfield. Articles represent a broad range of exceptional scholarship including such pieces as 'The Accidental Exhibition: Chance as Curatorial Critique and Opportunity', which elucidates the possibilities offered by an increased interest in chance and indeterminacy as curatorial strategies.
