 Position Title:
 Dean, School of Media Studies

 The New School for Public Engagement invites applications for an
 inaugural Dean and faculty member of the School of Media Studies
 starting in Fall 2012.

 The successful candidate will be a distinguished media scholar and/or
 innovative practitioner who can provide leadership at a key moment of
 development and help to meet the challenges of a complex media age. We
 seek a leader who has a broad and deep grasp of the transdisciplinary,
 transformational, and transnational nature of the field, as well as a
 commitment to specific areas of interest.

 The position provides a unique opportunity for the development of new
 initiatives and programs, for exploiting synergies between undergraduate
 and graduate offerings, and for strengthening and/or redefining existing
 programs and offerings. The Dean will serve a five-year renewable term,
 with rights to return to the faculty on completion of the term. As the
 inaugural Dean, s/he would ideally bring a combination of intellect,
 imagination, initiative, and administrative leadership to the job.

 Responsibilities include:
 € Build and promote the School of Media Studies and its programs in New
 York City, nationally and globally;
 € Help to lead conversations about media across the University;
 € Provide leadership in curricular expansion and increased student
 enrollment, particularly at the undergraduate level;
 € Work with the Executive Dean of the division and other School leaders
 of the division;
 € Work with and represent the faculty in identifying significant
 programmatic opportunities;
 € Create structures and mechanisms that promote excellence as a
 fundamental principle in the development of the School;
 € Support the pursuit of external funding opportunities.

 The New School for Public Engagement comprises five schools: the School
 of Undergraduate Studies; the School of Writing; the School of
 Languages; the Milano School International Affairs, Management, and
 Urban Policy; and the School of Media Studies. The School of Media
 Studies, which developed a pioneering master¹s degree in Media Studies,
 offers both undergraduate and graduate curricula that span all major
 aspects of media study and production. Its flagship MA program currently
 enrolls nearly 600 students from 30 countries. Inspired by the
 integration of theory and practice, by the diversity of media forms as
 tools of creative expression and thoughtful analysis, and responsiveness
 to the urgent questions of the day, Media Studies is poised to move into
 the next stage of its growth. The new Dean will facilitate this process
 by creating links across various disciplines, projects and
 constituencies within the university and beyond.

 Note: The Dean of the School of Media Studies will also be considered an
 Associate Dean of the New School for Public Engagement and will report
 to the Executive Dean of the division.

 Minimum Qualifications:
 € Ph.D. or equivalent in Media Studies or related field  € A proven
 record of teaching excellence  € Scholarship or creative work
 appropriate to associate or full professor rank € Demonstrated
 administrative and leadership experience € Ability to combine theory and
 practice is highly desirable
