Bodies of Evidence: Crime, Gender, and Representation

A Crime Studies Network Conference

Newcastle University
2nd April 2012

Keynote Speaker: Deborah Jermyn (Roehampton)

‘The death of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world’
Edgar Allan Poe

Representations of crime are frequently characterised by strongly gendered meanings and inflections, and are constructed in ways which can both shore up and disrupt dominant models of gender and sexuality. This one day conference seeks to open up the complex intersections between crime and gender in a range of visual and literary representations, from news media to detective fiction, and fine art to film posters. Proposals for papers are welcomed from a wide range of disciplines, including literature, film, television and media studies, art history, history, sociology, philosophy, modern languages.

Topics for discussion include but are not limited to:

 *   Gender and genre
 *   Representations of sex work
 *   True crime
 *   Gender and violence
 *   Victims of crime
 * The detective, the femme fatale, and other archetypes
 * Crime and gender in computer games and other interactive media
 *   Historical crime
 *   Political crimes
 *   Sex crimes
 *   Forensics and the corpse
 *   Digital crime
 *   Crime and (post)feminisms

Please send 250-300 word abstracts for 20 minute papers to (k.m.farrimond /at/ ncl.ac.uk) by 15th January 2012. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 31st January 2012, followed by a full programme for the symposium on 15th February 2012.
