Full Professor of Cultural Sociology
38 hours per week (part-time employment negotiable)

The new professor will normally spend forty percent of his or her time 
on research and sixty percent on teaching. Both activities include 
administrative tasks.
Tasks
Contributing to the broad and diverse research and teaching profile of 
Sociology in Amsterdam;
Developing, carrying out and supervising empirical sociological research 
at a high academic level, further developing international leadership in 
this field, developing a research line in collaboration with junior 
staff members and other researchers working in the Amsterdam Institute 
for Social Science Research (AISSR) and its sociology Program Groups;
Teaching general, specialist and methodological courses in the 
bachelor-, master-, research master- and PhD-programmes of the 
department, and supervising graduate students;
Acquiring and helping to acquire external funding for research (also on 
behalf of junior researchers);
Actively contributing to the development of sociology in general and 
cultural sociology in particular in the national and international 
context by publishing and participating in national and international 
research networks and educational initiatives;
Carrying out administrative tasks on behalf of the Department of 
Sociology and Anthropology, the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science 
Research (AISSR)—notably the AISSR Program Groups ‘Citizenship and 
Culture’ and ‘Institutions, Inequality and Internationalization’—, the 
interdisciplinary centers, the teaching programs, and so forth.
Requirements
In possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (or foreign 
equivalent), or willingness to acquire such a qualification on a fairly 
short term;
Strong general knowledge in the field of sociology;
Commitment to the research agenda of the AISSR in general (as carried 
out by the sociology Program Groups of the AISSR) and empirical cultural 
sociology in particular, and commitment to enhance interdisciplinary 
collaborations in this specific field;
Outstanding track record in research on cultural sociology, as 
exemplified by a strong publication record in internationally 
peer-reviewed journals and books published by internationally recognised 
press;
Demonstrated ability to acquire research funding from external sources 
(e.g. Netherlands’ Organization for Scientific Research or other 
research councils, European Union, or other national and international 
funding agencies);
Thorough mastery of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods;
A proven record of high-quality teaching, preferably at the bachelor-, 
master- and PhD-level;
A commitment to teaching general courses as well as specialist courses 
in the Bachelor and Master programs in Sociology and in the 
interdisciplinary Research Master Social Sciences, in particular within 
the cultural sociology specializations. The latter include BA-courses 
such as the ‘Cultural sociology’, ‘Urban Culture’, ‘Social Theories of 
Sexuality’ and ‘Internet sociology’, and the MA-courses such as 
‘Culture, consumption and commerce, ‘Globalization of culture and media’ 
and ‘Sociology of religion’;
Track record in administration and commitment to carry out 
administrative tasks;
Adequate knowledge of Dutch, or the willingness to learn Dutch within 
two years.

Appointment
Salary before tax is max. € 7142 per month plus 8% holiday allowance, 
8.3% end-of-year allowance, contributions to health care, travel costs 
etc., in conformity with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch 
Universities.
