Call for Papers Cuadernos de Informacion #30, June 2012
 Special Issue: =93Who=92s a Journalist, What=92s News, What=92s Media: Tow=
ards the
Renewal of Journalism=94
The next issue of Cuadernos de Informacion, the peer-reviewed journal of
the School of Communications at Universidad Cat=F3lica de Chile, will be
devoted to the future of journalism. We invite researchers and scholars to
submit papers related to this special call.
Deadline for submissions is March 1, 2012 via www.cuadernos.info
Journalism is in flux. The digitization and convergence of the industry is
changing the ways of producing, delivering and consuming news. As social
network sites, micro-blogs and other Web 2.0 platforms disseminate, ever
more people are joining the ranks of citizen journalism and, with it,
redefining the boundaries of who is a journalist and what news is.
Digitization has also translated into news becoming more of a commodity
online, with news companies struggling to attract attention to their
content and add value to their audiences. The fragmentation of audiences
has also led companies to experiment with new business models and develop
innovative news services. The field has witnessed the creation of new
careers, such as Web curators, community managers, social media editors and
data journalists. Inasmuch as the process of digitization has opened new
opportunities for journalism, it has also created new challenges to the
profession and the industry in general.

This special issue of Cuadernos de Informaci=F3n seeks original qualitative=
,
quantitative and comparative research on
the changes in journalism brought about by digitization and convergence, as
well as the implications of these changes for news workers, audiences, and
media companies. We welcome manuscripts covering any media form, and on any
local, national or international context, that tackle the changing
conditions of journalism. Whatever the approach, our goal is to select
manuscripts that address important issues for the future of journalism,
including, but not limited to, the following themes:

-The impact of new technologies on reporting
-Changing relationship between editors and reporters
-Innovative news formats
-Best practices in online journalism

Participatory journalism
-Changes in the relationship between journalists and the public
-Social media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc.) and news

-Crowdsourcing

Journalism as a profession
-Changes in journalists=92 professional identity
-Doing more with less resources
-Challenges to journalism education
-New careers and employment issues

Business models for news
-The commoditization of news
-Emerging trends in funding models for news
-Non-profit news organizations
-Crowdfunding

Journalism and democracy
-The effects of the changing nature of journalism on democracy
-Soft news, infotainment and political life
-Social and digital platforms, political participation, and government
accountability
-Ethical and legal issues related to globally accessible journalism

All submissions will undergo blind, peer review. The issue is scheduled for
publication in the second half of 2012. Authors are welcome to contact the
guest editor, Dr. Sebasti=E1n Valenzuela, at (savalenz /at/ uc.cl), to discuss the
appropriateness of a potential submission for the special issue.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Manuscripts must be submitted in Spanish, English or Portuguese, in MS Word
(.doc) format, via www.cuadernos.info. Manuscripts must not have been
published elsewhere or be currently under consideration for any other
publication.
Manuscripts should have a length of 3,500 to 7,000 words, excluding
abstracts, endnotes, and references. Prepare the manuscript in strict
accordance with the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association (APA):
1. Page 1 should include: 1) title in English and Spanish, reflecting the
subject matter of the manuscript.  Maximum length allowed is 85 characters
including spaces. 2) First and last names of all authors, including their
institutional affiliation. 3) Contact information of the lead author. 4) A
short bio of each author, including degrees and research areas. 5) Source
of funding for the research, if any.
2. Page 2 should include: 1) Abstract in English and Spanish (maximum of
150 words), explaining the purpose of the study, method, main results and
conclusions. 2) Key words in English and Spanish, with a minimum of four
and a maximum of eight.
3. Page 3 starts with the title and main text. The body of the manuscript
should be organized using numbered headings and subheadings (1.1, 1.2). We
recommend using the following structure: 1. Introduction, 2. Literature
review and theoretical framework, 3. Hypotheses and/or research questions,
4. Method, 5. Results, and 6., Discussion. The introduction must focus on
the main issues addressed by the manuscript, the purpose of the study and
its relevance. The literature review and theoretical framework is a
discussion of previous work on the subject as well as the theory that
guides the study. Hypotheses and research questions should be clearly
stated (Hypothesis 1, 2, etc.). The method section should be detailed
enough to allow the replication of the study by other authors. Results
should present the main findings of the study, leaving for the discussion
section the interpretation of the findings according to the chosen
theoretical framework. The discussion should also include directions for
future research.
4. Standard type (12-point font, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 1.0 inch
margins) should be used for all sections.
5. References should include all (and only) works cited in the text,
organized by alphabetical order first and by chronological order if more
than one work by the same author us cited. Second and subsequent lines
should have hanging indent of 0.5 inch (References should also start in a
new page).
6. All tables, figures, appendices and notes should be placed after the
references.

Remove all author names and institutional information from the main text,
so as to enable blinded peer review (author information should be in the
title page only). Likewise, the manuscript must be written using the 3rd
person, never in 1st person.
Typography. Use quotation marks only for exact quotes. Place direct
quotations longer than 40 words in a free-standing block of typewritten
lines, and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line,
indented 1/2 inch from the left margin. The parenthetical citation should
come after the closing punctuation mark. Technical terms will be written
with single quotation marks. Use endnotes only to add information that
cannot be included in the body of the text and only when strictly necessary=
.
Tables and graphs. These must be numbered in order; each one must have a
title and indicate the source of information (if it is the author=92s, it
must be labeled as such). Reference to each Table or Graphic must be made
in the appropriate place of the text.
Manuscript Review

All articles published in Cuadernos de Informacion are submitted to blind
peer-review. Once a submitted article is deemed to fit the basic
requirements of the journal, the Editorial Board will forward the
manuscript to peer review. A minimum of two reviewers will recommend
whether the submission should be published, revised and resubmitted, or
rejected. The reviewers=92 comments will be made available to the author(s)
so they can improve their manuscript accordingly.
In case of discrepancies, the Editorial Board will resort to specialized
arbitration. The normal review period is three months. The journal will not
provide any information about the state of any submitted article before it
is communicated to the author via e-mail.
Conflict of interests: authors and reviewers must declare any direct or
indirect financial interest they may have with any organization related to
the topic of the manuscript that could affect the production or
dissemination of the paper that has been submitted. Authors whose papers
have been accepted for publication will receive proofs of their manuscript
in advance to enable proof-reading. Only a small numbers of corrections can
be made at this stage.  The author(s) will receive a copy of the issue in
which the article is published free of charge.
