Postdoctoral Fellow:
Conceptualizing normative frameworks for sustainability

The successful candidate will be responsible for a two year project
that aims to contribute to a greater understanding of existing
normative frameworks regarding sustainability in the food and biomass
production chain, and will examine these values and attitudes from a
global perspective. This project will seek to identify aspects of
normative frameworks and further to identify shared views and values
as well as areas of divergence in normative regard for
sustainability-related issues. The position is situated within a
vibrant and growing multidisciplinary programme that explores issues

project based on his/her background and interests. The postdoc will
also have some responsibility for building and coordinating linkages
among the projects internationally. The appointee will work closely

attitudes and public perceptions, and will provide guidance as well as
coordination between the projects. Additionally, this position offers
opportunities for teaching in the areas of ethics, science
communication, and business in the life sciences.

The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:

Doctoral degree in the social sciences, e.g. social psychology, public
policy, sociology, or law
Publication in peer-reviewed journals
Experience conducting empirical research

Master Project:
Sustainability of food, biofuels and agriculture in the media: a news
framing analysis

The term =93sustainability=94 became an item on the political agenda and
in the media with the publication of the Brundtland report, in which
it was first defined. The Brundlandt commission defined sustainable
development as an approach to economic and industrial development by
which one meets the needs of the present without compromising the
needs of future generations. Over time, this somewhat philosophical
definition has become enriched with some 200 alternative definitions
in scientific literature, in literature on certification and by
different stakeholder groups (NGO=92s, industry, governmental papers).
Current definitions are broader than the original one and take into
consideration social, economic and environmental aspects.

The project =91sustainability of food, biofuels and agriculture in the
media=92 seeks to contribute to the emerging field of sustainability
research by studying sustainability definitions and sustainability
criteria in the national and international media. It is embedded in a
broader research project on sustainability of bioproducts. The aim is
to get a view on how, in the media, the term sustainability has
developed over time and which are and have been the main drivers
behind sustainability.

Description of Qualifications

The Master student has an interest in environmental, social and
economic perspectives of sustainability. Proficient command of English
and one of the following languages is a requirement: Dutch, French,
German or Portuguese. Experience in quantitative and qualitative
content analysis with an emphasis on framing analysis is a plus. This
is not a paid position.
European applicants might be, among others, eligible for an Erasmus
Mundus scholarship. For eligibility criteria, see:
