Challenges Facing the 21th Century Diplomat:
Representation, Communication, Negotiation and Training


On 25-26 October 2011, the Department of EU International Relations and 
Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe, Bruges campus, is organising 
an international conference to discuss new challenges facing diplomats 
today.

States and other international players interact through the mechanisms 
of representation, communication and negotiation, and all three 
functions of diplomacy have in the 21st century increasingly been 
challenged. There are more actors, more channels and more issues to deal 
with, and these changes must also be reflected in diplomatic training.

The two-day conference addresses these questions in three panel sessions 
with more than 15 international speakers. By bringing together scholars, 
trainers, diplomats and policy practitioners, the conference hopes not 
only to examine the challenges facing 21st century diplomats but also to 
provide some answers.

The conference language is English. Attendance is free of charge but an
