Two positions as Head of Research Area

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research in Braunschweig (Germany), member of the Leibniz Association (WGL) seeks to recruit two

Heads of Research Area

Both vacancies are full-time positions, initially with a fixed-term contract for three years. The successful applicant will be remunerated under the category "wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter/in" (TVL E-14), subject to funding.

*Position 1: Head of Research Area (Globalisation)*
Start: 1 October 2011.
Deadline for applications: 15 August 2011.

Your tasks:
You will be the head of a research area focusing on ethnic and religious boundaries and the challenges of globalisation. The research area seeks to develop new approaches to cultural studies research on textbooks and other educational media.
You will design the medium-term research strategy, submit proposals for research and infrastructure projects, and supervise the early-career scholars within the research area. You will also be involved in the general leadership of the institute.

We expect:
-  Habilitation or post-doctoral research of equivalent calibre in the social sciences, cultural studies or humanities (e.g., Islamic studies, migration research, education science, sociology or political science, in each case specialising in Muslim-majority societies).
-  Excellent theoretical and methodological skills
-  The ability to transfer academic findings into educational practice and the public sphere.
-  Verified leadership experience
-  Experience in acquiring third-party funds and in research management
-  A high level of motivation, the ability to work independently and as part of a team
-  The competence necessary to supervise early-career scholars
-  International experience, interdisciplinary and intercultural communication skills
-  Fluency in German
-  Proficient English and a working knowledge of a further language, ideally Arabic

We would welcome:
-  Work experience in non-university research institutions
-  Experience in research on textbooks and other educational media
-  Experience in gender research

The successful candidate will also be given the opportunity to fulfil a teaching post, if so desired.

Start: 1 January 2012
Deadline for applications: 1 Sept. 2011.

Your tasks:
You will develop and head a newly established research area studying the history of research on textbooks and educational media as well as its theoretical and methodological foundations.
You will design its medium-term research strategy, submit proposals for research and infrastructure projects, and supervise the early-career scholars within the research area. You will also be involved in the general leadership of the institute.

We expect:
-  Habilitation or post-doctoral research of equivalent calibre in the social sciences, ideally in the field of empirical education research or education sociology, sociology of knowl-edge, or media studies
-  Excellent theoretical and methodological skills
-  The ability to transfer academic findings into educational practice and the public sphere.
-  Verified leadership experience
-  Experience in acquiring third-party funds and in research management
-  A high level of motivation, the ability to work independently and as part of a team
-  The competence necessary to supervise early-career scholars
-  International experience, interdisciplinary and intercultural communication skills
-  Fluency in German
-  Proficient English, and working knowledge of a further language
