HELSINKI PHOTOMEDIA: IMAGES IN CIRCULATION

Three-day conference on 28-30 March 2012, Finland

Aalto University and its School of Art and Design is launching a series of research meetings initiated by the Unit of Photography. The conference is a new venue for researchers working on different aspects of photography and it will be arranged every two years. The first three-day conference will deal with the theme Images in Circulation.

Helsinki Photomedia addresses photography as a multi-faceted and changing field of interrelated phenomena encompassing all photographic technologies and the related professional and cultural discourses and practices. The conference brings together researchers from multiple disciplines in order to create new crossovers between artistic and scientific research in photography and their respective themes and methodologies.

In the contemporary media landscape old and new photographic practices coexist. People take more photographs than ever, and the diversity of their possible uses has increased enormously. Photography, as a set of technologies, practices and discourses, is under rapid transformation.

This current media change poses significant challenges on photography research. The new photographic technologies and applications are accompanied by new production and publishing structures that alter the ways photographs circulate. This has multifaceted social, economical, political and theoretical consequences that are difficult to decipher.

We would like to invite scholars and artists interested in the theme to share their visions on these and related questions. Both traditional academic papers as well as workshop proposals are welcome.

Conference venue will be Lume Media Center in Aalto University Helsinki, Finland. http://lume.aalto.fi/en/

Conference fee will be 100 Euros.

Call for papers including detailed information on practices of registration, important dates, participation fee, invited speakers, and other relevant issues is published on the Helsinki Photomedia Conference web page:http://helsinkiphotomedia.aalto.fi
