Media reporting of the attacks on Dubrovnik and recognition of Croatia
– 20 years later
October 1 -2, 2011, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Call for papers

Scientific conference titled “Media reporting of the attacks on
Dubrovnik and recognition of Croatia – 20 years later” willbe held on
October 1-2, 2011 at the University of Dubrovnik.

Conference has been organized on occasion of the twentieth anniversary
of the attack on Dubrovnik and its surrounding area by the Yugoslav
people’s army and Montenegrin and Serbian reservists. Invitation to
the conference has been extended to international experts dealing with
the subjects of media at war, media role in dissolution of Yugoslavia,
modern history focusing on the dissolution of Yugoslavia,
international relations et al. Also invited to the conference are
media actors (journalists, editors) that have been reporting on the
attacks on Dubrovnik in 1991-1992.

Conference shall be portioned into two components: for the first part,
a panel shall be organized to allow the media actors to present their
experiences, while the second portion shall consist of presentations
of all relevant scientific articles dealing with the topic of the
conference.

Possible presentation topics:

•	War reporting practices from the Dubrovnik area
•	Media analysis on the subject of war in Dubrovnik, Croatia and
former Yugoslav territory from 1988 to 1995.
•	Media and their role in international relations, with special
mention of recognition of new states (Croatia and Slovenia  )
•	Strategic communication during wartime (media war)
•	Journalists during the war, humanizing the war, journalist
identification with casualties of war
•	Journalistic sources in wartime
•	War propaganda, media control and manipulation
•	Embedded journalism

Presentation focus should be Dubrovnik and its surrounding area.
However, acceptable subjects can aid in clarifying media and
journalist roles in war preparation, execution and its conclusion.
Following the review process, accepted articles will be published as
the Conference proceedings.

Deadlines:

Conference participation application (title of the presentation and
summary) – until September 1, 2011.
Presentation approval within two weeks of applying to e-mail: (mbraut /at/ unidu.hr)
Article delivery (3.000-6.000 characters, summary and 6 key words,
Harvard System of Referencing) – until September 20, 2011.
Conference proceedings publication – December 1, 2011.
