Tue Mar 15 16:55:38 GMT 2011
 PhD Studentship A History of Feminism on Television
* *
   Media, Film and Journalism De Montfort University, Leicester
*STARTING OCTOBER 2011*
A fully funded PhD research studentship in the Cinema and Television
History Research Centre
<http://dmu.ac.uk/research/humanities/cinema-and-television-history-research-centre/index.jsp>
and in conjunction with the Media Discourse Group
<http://www.dmu.ac.uk/research/humanities/media-discourse/>, which both
have reputations for 'world-leading' research.istoryHI
The project will investigate the emergence of discourses of feminism on
British television within a critical period of social change during the
second half of the twentieth century. It will involve conducting
archival research to trace and analyse the coverage of 'feminism' within
factual programming and in the context of British public service
broadcasting.

Helen Wood on +44 (0)116 250 6509 or email (hwood /at/ dmu.ac.uk)
 PhD Studentship (fees-only) The Mediation of Security: television,
 narrative and representations of public risk
   Media, Film and Journalism De Montfort University, Leicester
*STARTING OCTOBER 2011: *a PhD research studentship (covering tuition
fee costs and available to suitably qualified UK or EU students) is
being offered by the Media Discourse Group (see our webpage at
http://www.dmu.ac.uk/research/humanities/media-discourse/), a research
collective that achieved a 'world-leading' score in the 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise. **
The project is based on a comparative analysis of fictional and
news-based media sources that contribute to the public understanding of
security, risk and political uncertainty. Television fiction shares with
television news the tendency to frame security events and practices
within distinct narrative categories - such as 'counter-terrorism' -
that contribute to the reproduction of public attitudes concerning
existential threats. The role of the successful candidate will be to
investigate the range of discourses animated by both TV news and TV drama.
