Volume 2, Spring 2011 =E2=80=93 Discriminati= on and Exclusion
In the next issue of Open Citizenship, we will take= a closer look
at exclusion and discrimination in Europe. This includes leg= al
discrimination caused by limiting cit- izenship concepts at the EU
and M= ember State level, as well as cultural obstacles to
integration. In additio= n, the issue will explore possible
solutions, by outlining, for example, ca= ses in which progressive
forms of citizenship have partly overcome these pr= actices.
Exclusion and discrimination are relevant to different fields such=
as political participation, social services, cultural inclusion,
education= and others. Discrimination can take place when EU
citizens cross Member St= ate borders or af- fect third-country
nationals lawfully residing in the EU= . Discrimination may also
take place at the personal level, in cultural def= initions of what
is =E2=80=98European=E2=80=99. The subject of discriminati= on is
broad and open to diverse interpretations. We welcome submissions on
all aspects= of discrimination, including:
- political participation rights of third= -country nationals
- and EU expatriates in EU Member States
- social= exclusion and inclusion: who is a =E2=80=98burden=E2=80=99
for Member Stat= es
- loss of legal status when crossing borders, e.g., homosexual marri= ages

Finally, we invite critics to writ= e reviews of books, films, art
and music related to the is- sues of EU citi= zenship and
discrimination and exclusion. Email us a short description of w= hat
you would like to review and why and, if we like your idea, the
editors= will ask you to write a review of you suggested piece about
4 single-space= d pages (about 8,000 charac- ters) or a review essay
