FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES
Commentary and Criticism Call for Papers
We invite contributions for the Commentary and Criticism section of
Feminist Media Studies.

Potential contributors can write to co-editors, Kaitlynn Mendes ((kmendes /at/ dmu.ac.uk)) and Kumarini Silva ((k.silva /at/ neu.edu)) to express preliminary interest. Final essays are due by 4th July 2011.

GENDER, MEDIA AND PARENTING

As the subject of thousands of books, videos, seminars, websites, news and magazine articles, parents have long sought advice on raising children. From experts such as Dr. Spockâ??s famous book Baby and Child (1946) to modern websites such as mumsent.co.uk or parents.com, the amount of parenting information is vast. News of â??publicâ?? pregnancies and births are also increasingly found in newspapers, magazines and websites. In 2008, Spainâ??s newly appointed (and seven month pregnant) defense minister Carme Chacón made international headlines, while in 2010 the births of Britainâ??s Prime Minister David Cameronâ??s daughter, and opposition Leader Ed Milibandâ??s son were also hot news topics. Popular magazines such as the USâ??s People even regularly include photos of celebrity offspring. In addition, there is an increaing rise in the public coverage?and corresponding discoourse?of same-sex couplesâ?? adoptions. In keeping with this, we are looking for short essays (1500-2000 words) that engage with various aspects of gender, media, and parenting. Some questions that maybe useful to engage with include, but are not limited to asking who these stories are targeted towards? What important messages about gender and gender roles are embodied in such constructions? How do men, women and feminists utilize mediated information on parenting? How are different types of parents (gay, lesbian, single, divorced, married) represented in the press?

Papers should be sent to Kaitlynn Mendes ((kmendes /at/ dmu.ac.uk)) and Kumarini Silva ((K.Silva /at/ neu.edu)) by July 4th. Please see the Feminist Media Studies style guide for information on how to format the paper. Potential contributors are encouraged to contact us with any queries regarding the call.

GENDER, ACTIVISM AND MEDIA

The twentieth and twenty-first centuries have witnessed the rise of various forms of activism from campaigns for universal suffrage, civvil rights, an end to apartheid, support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered members of society, to the peace movements, the new left, and more. More recently, the activism and protests in Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Sudan and other Middle-Eastern nations has dominated Western news coverage. But to what extent are the mediations of such activities gendered? Whose voices are prioritized, marginalized or absent in such mediations? What feminist media strategies are being employed to bring forth social change? Such questions merit further debate and we therefore invite contributors to submit short essays (1500-2000 words) on various aspects of gender, activism and media, past or present, anywhere in the world. Essays can focus on the mediation of particular social movements, protests, campaigns, individuals or leaders.

Papers should be sent to Kaitlynn Mendes ((K.mendes /at/ dmu.ac.uk)) and Kumarini Silva ((K.Silva /at/ neu.edu)) by July4th . Please see the Feminist Media Studies style guide for information on how to format the paper. Potential contributors are encouraged to contact us with any queries regarding the call.
