PUBLIC MEDIA 2.0 @ICA

The Journalism Studies Division is cosponsoring a half-day preconference on The Future of Public Media: Participatory Models, Global Networks in Boston

Time: Thursday, 26 May 13:00 17:00
Location: Westin Waterfront Hotel

WWhether you are interested in issues related to public and participatory media in the global context, or seeking new ways to collaborate with colleagues working in the field, this preconference may provide you original thinking about participatory public media, and offer possibilities for establishing collaborations between scholars, practitioners, and policymakers.

The discussion focuses on how best to define legitimate practices and rationales for public service media in an increasingly user-centric environment, new methods for determining and maintaining credibility in open communications systems, and tools for mapping emerging forms of public media â??beyond broadcast.â?? There is also a need to engage scholars from beyond Europe, the U.S. and Australia in comparative research in order to more fully understand the shifting dynamics of this sector. Speakers include:
? Patricia Aufderheide of Ameriican University
? Sean Jacobs of the New School
?â?¢ Graham Murdock of Loughborough University
? Vibodhh Parthasarathi of the Centre for Culture, Media & Governance, Jamia Millia Islamia

Facilitators: Jessica Clark (American University) and Minna Aslama (University of Helsinki/Fordham University)

Beyond showcasing and discussing the core issues, the goal of the preconference is to envision ways and next steps through which a scholarly collaboration can continue after the ICA.

The preconference is organized by the American Universityâ??s Center for Social Media in consultation with organizers of the annual Re-Visionary Interpretations of the Public Enterprise (RIPE) conference, and sponsored by the Philosophy of Communication, Communication Law and Policy, Popular Communication Division, and Journalism Studies Divisions.

The preconference fee will be $50 (including refreshments). Please RSVP to Jessica Clark at (jessica /at/ buildtheecho.net) and register here (check box #P13). Join the conference facilitators and other attendees on Facebook to discuss related topics: http://on.fb.me/ICA_pubmedia.
