Call for Book Chapters

Journalism and Diaspora in the Era of Media Convergence

Edited by Dr Ola Ogunyemi, University of Lincoln, UK.

The publication of the book is planned for 2013 by Troubadour.

The Media of Diaspora Research Group (MDRG) announces a call for
chapters on topics related to journalism practices by diasporic groups
around the world. There is a clear gap in literature about the
perspectives of the practitioners of media of diasporas on professional
values; about what goes on in their news room; about the diversity of
their content; about their appropriation of multiplatform and about
their audiences. Moreover, scholarly interest in their journalism
practices is under- theorised because they are regarded as "...less
glamorous journalistic workplaces" (Wahl-Jorgensen& Hanitzsch, 2009, p.
12). As a result, we have little understanding of their working
conditions within economic, political, technological and social contexts
on the one hand; and of how they provide a competing account of
journalism cultures to that of the mainstream and alternative
(non-diasporic) media on the other.

Hence, this book argues that journalism practices by diasporic groups
play "a key role in shaping our identities as citizens, making possible
the conversations and deliberations between and among citizens and their
representatives so essential to successful self-governance" (ibid p. 3).
The book will examine the routines and practices of the media for and by
diasporic groups through six thematic parts, that is, professional
values, economic models, content, audiences, multiplatform and global
policy. Please indicate which part you are submitting to. Preference
will be given to proposals with strong empirical focus and the use of
relevant theories.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a 500-word chapter
proposal by February 3, 2012. Authors will be notified of the status of
their proposal by March 5, 2012. Full chapters (7,000 words including
references) are expected to be submitted by August 31, 2012. All
submitted manuscripts will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
Final revised manuscripts are due on November 30, 2012. Proposal and
manuscripts should be sent electronically to the editor
(oogunyemi /at/ lincoln.ac.uk)

Members of the reviewing committee are Dr Ola Ogunyemi, UK; Dr Daniel
Muller, Germany; Prof. Ralph Negrine, UK; Ms Carmen Diop, France; and Ms
Lioba Suchenwirth, UK.

About the Media of Diaspora Research Group (MDRG): it is a network of
academics and professionals. It is based in the Lincoln School of
Journalism, University of Lincoln, with members from universities around
the world. MDRG researchers examine the articulation of social issues by
the ethnic minorities in their own media, that is, self-representation;
and examine their contribution to the diversity of the public sphere.
