¡Documentary Now! CALL FOR PAPERS
A Conference on the Contemporary Contexts and Possibilities of the Documentary!
Breaking News: Documentary Now! has joined forces with Open City London Documentary Festival, the new documentary film festival in London running from 21-24 June 2012. Conference Location: UCL, Central London
¡Documentary Now! brings together scholars, filmmakers, students, and interested members of the public to discuss current trends in documentary film, from the return of documentary as a theatrical box office phenomenon, to broadcast television, the web, and beyond. It explores questions of industry, audiences, aesthetics, political engagement, documentary’s relationship to the mainstream media and other many other issues. What’s new in documentary? Where is documentary headed?
This year’s theme is ¡Revolution Now! The organizers welcome anything tied to this theme as well as all proposals related in one way or another to the topic of documentary (film, video, audio, digital, photographic, interactive, etc).

Propaganda and counter propaganda
YouTube, Social Media, and virtual revolution
Post-revolutionary documentary
Documentary as dissent
Politics of documentary/Documentary and ‘the political’
Documentary and Social Movements
Genre and the commercial documentary
Character drive in recent documentary
If you would like to give a 20 minute presentation at the conference OR send proposals for themed panels of 3-4 people, please send proposals (including 250-300 word abstracts of papers) to (documentarynow2012 /at/ gmail.com)
Workshops and performances also considered. The deadline for proposals is January 31 2012. There is no fee for attendance but registration is required.
¡Documentary Now! is co-organised by Michael Chanan and Alisa Lebow, and made possible with support of Brunel University, University of Roehampton, and the Professor of Communications, Lincoln University.
