1st Summer School in ICTethics
Budapest, Hungary
2011, Monday 20 June - Friday 24 June

The Summer School is designed to draw together a group of highly motivated researchers from different disciplines working on relevant aspects of ICT developments. The Summer School will provoke critical thinking and mutual learning of some of the most crucial issues facing modern society.

For whom?

Ph.D students & prospective Ph.D students
Young researchers
in engineering, computer science, security, sociology, philosophy, ethics, law, new media and any other discipline studying relevant aspects of ICT developments.

Up to 20 highly motivated participants
selected on the basis of an Expression of Interest (See How to apply?).
The selection process is now open.

You will go home with

• a critical understanding of the inter-disciplinary aspects of the issues linked to ICT

• biometrics, surveillance and tracking
• screening, data mining, sorting of people

• risk society and discrimination


Privacy and Data Protection

• internet services, cloud computing,
• the EU Data Protection Guideline and its revision
• international and national law in EU countries
• the end or beginning of privacy?


Social development of science

• the social construction of technology
• the role of science in social innovation
• small worlds and scale free networks
• ethics as internal dynamics or external limitation


What does it cost?

The 1st Summer School in ICTethics is sponsored by the European Commission.
(Grant agreement SiS-CT-2009-230368: ICTethics)

The organizers cover local facilities (single hotel room, meals, conference material, registration fee) for all participants.
Participants pay their own travel costs to Budapest.

Travel grants are available for all participants, employed as researchers in EU-funded projects.
A limited number of travel grants are made available for other participants.

How to apply

Apply today. The Summer School is limited to 20 participants.

1. Send an e-mail
with your address, name of educational institution, title of (planned) research and (if applicable) the name of the EU funded project on which you (will) work.

2. Attach an “Expression of Interest” (maximum 500 words)
which explains why this Summer School would be particularly relevant to you, and how your participation will enrich the discussion with other participants.

3. Ask your research supervisor to send a separate e-mail
confirming your research affiliation and briefly commenting on the technical merits of your work and participation.
