'Whodunit', and how have they 'dunit'? Investigating Agatha Christie's works and their adaptations

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

Agatha Christie is the best-selling author of all time. She has sold over two billion books worldwide and has been translated into over 45 languages. She has written over 80 novels and a number of plays. Her work has been adapted for cinema, television, animation and, more recently, computer games. The characters she created have assumed the status of 'fictional celebrities'; Poirot and Miss Marple have become transnational phenomena, and are the protagonists of Japanese animations series and video games for various platforms.
To investigate the work of the Queen of Crime, the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of Derby will host a one-day Conference on September 12, 2011. The event will emphasize the numerous adaptations of her works across different media and different production contexts.

The confirmed Keynote Speaker of the event is Prof Sarah Street (The University of Bristol)

Papers are invited on, but are not limited to, the following topics:

-         The process of detection in Agatha Christie

-         Agatha Christie's detectives

-         Popularity of the 'whodunit' genre in the 20th and 21st century

-         Television and/or Cinematic adaptations

-         The country house, the detective, the murders - how contemporary crime genre has been inspired by Christie

-         Agatha Christie and the Theatre

-         Animation and Computer games adaptations of Christie's novels

We welcome proposals from both established scholars and early career researchers including postgraduate students. The conference aims to bring together Agatha Christie scholars for a day of celebration of her work and of the works she continues to inspire.
