One-Day Symposium
'Dragons, Fire, Hornets:
Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy from Page to Screen'

Barry Forshaw, author of The Man Who Left Too Soon: The Biography of
Stieg Larsson (John Blake Publishing, 2010), British Crime Writing
(Greenwood World Publishing, 2008), and The Rough Guide to Crime
Fiction (Rough Guide Publishing, 2007).
Participants are invited for a one-day symposium held at the
University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, UK. The aim is to facilitate
further discussion about the impact, influences, and adaptations of
Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy - as a series of books,
television programmes, and films. As well as considering the trilogy
in all its forms, the event is designed to provide an opportunity to
look closely at all three fictions: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo;
The Girl who Played with Fire, and The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's
Nest. The symposium is designed to encourage open debate about this
global phenomenon. There are an estimated 45 million readers of The
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The novels have been translated into
many languages, and the films are due for a Hollywood 're-imagining'
under the directorship of David Fincher. What is the secret behind
the works' enormous success and crossover appeal? It is hoped that
selected papers from the conference will be published in the form of
an edited book collection.
Proposals are invited for 20 minute presentations. Topics may
include (but not limited to):
1. Crossover between literature/television/film (in terms of
adaptation, the circulation of fictions, and medium-specificities)
2. Translations and transitions (local to global, Europe to Hollywood)
3. Contextual positioning of the trilogy in the wider field of
Scandinavian crime fiction and/or Eurocrime
4. Close textual analysis of the texts
5. Debates around gender, genre and socio-cultural readings
Proposals of not more than 200 words for 20 minute presentations
