litical, social and =0Acultural actors. Thus, it includes articles about an=

ves. The articles published in this journal =0Areflect the scope and com- p=
lexity of the issue of citizenship in Europe today. =0AThe basis for accept=
ing papers for publication is the agreement among a =0Acommittee of reviewe=
rs that the article makes a new, definitive, important or =0Adevelopmental =
contribution to the discourse on European citizenship.Texts are =0Adevided =
into three categories: It's Academic, Open Mic, Movement Watch, and =0ACrit=

sion=0A=0AIn the next issue of Open Citizenship, we will take a closer look=
 at exclusion =0Aand discrimination in Europe. This includes legal discrimi=
nation caused by =0Alimiting cit- izenship concepts at the EU and Member St=
ate level, as well as =0Acultural obstacles to integration. In addition, th=
e issue will explore possible =0Asolutions, by outlining, for example, case=
s in which progressive forms of =0Acitizenship have partly overcome these p=
ractices. Exclusion and discrimination =0Aare relevant to different fields =
such as political participation, social =0Aservices, cultural inclusion, ed=
ucation and others. Discrimination can take =0Aplace when EU citizens cross=
 Member State borders or af- fect third-country =0Anationals lawfully resid=
ing in the EU. Discrimination may also take place at the =0Apersonal level,=
 in cultural definitions of what is =E2=80=98European=E2=80=99. The subject=
 of =0Adiscrimination is broad and open to diverse interpretations. We welc=
ome =0Asubmissions on all aspects of discrimination, including:=0A- politic=

About the journal

Volume 2, Spring 2011 =E2=80=93 Discriminati= on and Exclusion

In the next issue of Open Citizenship, we will take= a closer look at exclusion and discrimination in Europe. This includes leg= al discrimination caused by limiting cit- izenship concepts at the EU and M= ember State level, as well as cultural obstacles to integration. In additio= n, the issue will explore possible solutions, by outlining, for example, ca= ses in which progressive forms of citizenship have partly overcome these pr= actices. Exclusion and discrimination are relevant to different fields such= as political participation, social services, cultural inclusion, education= and others. Discrimination can take place when EU citizens cross Member St= ate borders or af- fect third-country nationals lawfully residing in the EU= . Discrimination may also take place at the personal level, in cultural def= initions of what is =E2=80=98European=E2=80=99. The subject of discriminati= on is broad and open to diverse interpretations. We welcome submissions on all aspects= of discrimination, including:
- political participation rights of third= -country nationals
- and EU expatriates in EU Member States
- social= exclusion and inclusion: who is a =E2=80=98burden=E2=80=99 for Member Stat= es
- loss of legal status when crossing borders, e.g., homosexual marri= ages
- how definitions of Europe exclude ethnic minorities or disadvanta= ged groups

Contributions for Movement Watch should be no longer than 4 single-spaced = pages (about 8,000 characters) and must include a descrip- tion of the orga= nisation or project and the organisation=E2=80=99s vision for EU citizenshi= p.

Critics=E2=80=99 Corner

Finally, we invite critics to writ= e reviews of books, films, art and music related to the is- sues of EU citi= zenship and discrimination and exclusion. Email us a short description of w= hat you would like to review and why and, if we like your idea, the editors= will ask you to write a review of you suggested piece about 4 single-space= d pages (about 8,000 charac- ters) or a review essay analysing several work= s of no more than 6 single-spaced pages (or 12,000 characters).
