[ecrea] CFP - Global Television: Aesthetics and Style

Mon Feb 07 12:39:34 GMT 2011

CALL FOR PAPERS: J Jacobs and S Peacock (eds.), Global Television: Aesthetics and Style (Continuum Press, forthcoming 2012)

The question of how television operates on a stylistic level has been critically underexplored, despite being fundamental to our viewing experience. Contributions are sought for a new book raising key questions about televisionâ??s artistic properties and possibilities. Although Film Studies has successfully (re)turned attention to matters of style and interpretation, its sibling discipline has left the territory uncharted â?? until now. Proposals are welcome on any aspect of television aesthetics and style, with a view to the collection presenting three types of essay: (i) conceptual pieces, examining the way we judge television as both cultural artifact and art form; (ii) close readings of particular television programmes/episodes focusing on aspects of aesthetic design; (iii) analyses of the impact of technology on television aesthetics and style. Proposals concentrating on examples or debates of world television are particularly welcome.

Proposals of no more than 300 words should be sent by March 14 2011 to (s.peacock /at/ herts.ac.uk) or (j.jacobs /at/ uq.edu.au) including a brief biographical statement. Essays are to be between 2000-5000 words, though 'critical snapshots' of 1000 words will also be considered.
