[ecrea] An alternative self-representation? Ethnic minority media, between hegemony and resistances

Mon Jan 18 16:29:04 GMT 2010

International conference
An alternative self-representation? Ethnic minority media, between hegemony and resistances
18-19 March 2010, Poitiers - France

An international conference organised by the European excellence team =20=

MINORITYMEDIA and the research center MIGRINTER.
The conference will be held in English, with a possible simultaneous =20
translation into French during the plenary sessions.

This international conference focuses on people who experience =20
deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation and who develop or =20
sustain distinct identities and social relations within and across =20
nation-states, through ethnic minority media. The purpose is to =20
understand the growing role of mediated communication in defining =20
meanings, uses and appropriations of cultural, religious and social =20
space. It aims to analyse, within the framework of ethnic minority =20
media, the perception of the feeling of belonging, the collective (re)=20=

presentation of the Self, as well as the cultural and religious =20
practices. The central question is: what role the ethnic minority =20
media play in imagining and mobilising new communities of belonging, =20
or transforming them in the context of globalisation and cultural =20
diversity?

Keynote speakers:

- Prof. Sirma BILGE (CEETUM, University of Montreal)

- Prof. Robin COHEN (IMI, University of Oxford)

- Prof. Daya THUSSU (University of Westminster)

61 communication papers presented into 12 parallel sessions.

1 roundtable organised with several journalists of ethnic minority =20
media in Europe.

See the complete programme and the registration form (to fill in =20
before February 28) on: www.minoritymedia.eu

Feel free to contact Isabelle Rigoni (isabelle.rigoni@univ-=20
poitiers.fr) for any request on the programme, and Francoise Braud =20
((francoise.braud /at/ cegetel.net)) for any administrative matter.
