PhD scholarships available at University of Ulster, Coleraine:

The 2008 RAE confirmed the position of Media Studies at the University of Ulster as one of the ten best research departments in the UK.

The Centre for Media Research of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />University of Ulster is now accepting applications for PhD research topics, beginning September, 2010. We are particularly anxious to receive applications for the following projects/areas:

Photography in the North of Ireland in the Nineteenth Century

Early and Silent American Cinema and the Irish Diaspora

50 years of UTV: A Social and Cultural History<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />



Documentary practice and the  Northern Ireland Prisons Memory Archive



Journalism and the public sphere in Northern Ireland after devolution



Public policymaking in N. Ireland: The case of the indigenous interactive media industry, 2005-10



Virtual worlds and artistic practice

We are also happy to consider applicants' own proposals in other areas of film and media studies.

The following scholarships are available and are awarded on a competitive basis:

DEL Research Studentships (DEL)
DEL (Department of Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland) research studentships pay tuition fees and an annual maintenance award of not less than £12,940 per annum. Full awards are available only to applicants normally resident in the UK. Applicants for these awards must have or expect to obtain the minimum of an upper second class honours degree in a subject area appropriate to the project.

Vice-Chancellor's Research Scholarships (VCRS)
A number of University funded VCRS will be available in certain subject areas. Applicants for these awards must have or expect to obtain the minimum of an upper second class honours degree in a specific research area (as advertised). They will cover tuition fees and a maintenance award of not less than £12,940 per annum for three years (subject to satisfactory academic performance). Applications are invited from UK, European Union and overseas students.

Applications for DEL and VCRS awards should be received by the Research Office on or before 26th March, 2010.
