[ecrea] New Internet Course - Development Communication

Wed Jan 13 19:40:38 GMT 2010

An internet based course for credit or non-credit is being offered by
the University of Missouri St. Louis this Spring. The 16 week course is
on the topic of Development Communication. The course will focus on the
failure of modernization theory and practice to deliver a substantial
change in developing nations. It will be from a non-western perspective
and it will examine how media function and for whom in poor nations.
Covered in detail will be cultural imperialism, participatory
communication theory, education-entertainment theory, the digital divide
and the role of women as well as NGOs in development. The textbook is
Development Communication: Reframing the Role of the Media
(Wiley-Blackwell, 2009) by Tom McPhail who also teaches the course.
There is a series of 1 hour weekly video lectures by McPhail, plus a
series of web based activities. Students from anywhere in the world -
with internet access - may enroll.
