"Societies Under Siege: Media, Government, Politics and Citizens' Freedoms in an Age of Terrorism"

Editors
Associate Professor Banu Baybars Hawks
Assistant Professor Lemi Baruh

For many years, terrorism has been a hot button issue that has preoccupied academics, media professionals and citizens throughout the world. Certainly, terrorism is a contested concept and different nations have had divergent experiences with terrorism. For example, United States' experience with international terrorism is not lengthy. When hijacked airliners brought down New York City's World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001 and damaged the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., roughly 3,000 persons died. Reactions to those events, through passage of laws, vigorous police measures, and military initiatives have placed the United States on a continuous war footing.

The aim of this edited volume (to be published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing) is to explore ongoing challenges involving social, communicative and policy responses to terrorism and conflict in national and international contexts.

Subjects include but are not limited to the following:
   * Discourses related to the concept of "terrorism."
* Media coverage of terrorism, of government responses, and media agenda-setting. * Comparative analysis of security and surveillance measures adopted by local, national and international governing bodies.
   * Media government relations
   * Media ethics in the coverage of conflict
   * Law, law enforcement and individual liberties.

* This book is scheduled to be published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. The expected publication date is 2011
