The New School M.A. Program in Media Studies
enrolls more than 500 students from 30
countries, and offers a curriculum in Media
Theory, History, and Criticism, Film Studies,
Media Management, and audio, video, film, and
digital media production. The program also

1. Assistant Professor of Film Studies
Description: The Media Studies Program at The
New School is seeking a tenure-track assistant
professor to begin July 1, 2010. We seek a
scholar and teacher to teach in the areas of
film studies and production, with an emphasis on
integrating theory and practice; to coordinate
the Film Form curriculum, which consists of
courses on the theory and practice of filmmaking
including Visual Systems; Cinematography: Art &
Technique; Production and Post-Production Studio
and to participate in student advising,
admissions evaluations, committee work, and
special projects. While the position is
primarily dedicated to supporting the graduate
program, opportunities for undergraduate teaching are likely to develop.
Qualifications: Terminal degree or equivalent
experience in a media related discipline (Ph.D.
preferred). The ideal candidate should have
technical and production experience with film
and digital media, as well as an understanding
of the role of time-based imagery in
contemporary media. The candidate must have
demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of
professional accomplishment. Some administrative experience is preferred
2. Associate or Full Professor of Media Studies
Description: The Media Studies Program at The
New School is seeking a tenure-track or tenured
associate or full professor to begin July 1,
2010. We seek a distinguished scholar and
teacher to teach in the areas of media history,
theory, philosophy and/or criticism as well as
in candidate?s area of academic specialization;
oversee required courses in media theory and
practice and/or thesis process; take a
leadership role in speaker series and other
academic symposia; and participate in student
advising, admissions evaluations, committee
work, and special projects. While the position
is primarily dedicated to supporting the
graduate program, opportunities for
undergraduate teaching are likely to develop.
Qualifications: Terminal degree (Ph.D.
preferred), or equivalent experience in a media
related discipline. The candidate must have
demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of
professional accomplishment warranting the rank
of associate or full professor. Some administrative experience is preferred.
3. Documentary Practice ? Renewable Three-Year Term Faculty Appointment
The M.A. in Media Studies Program at The New
School is seeking a faculty member for a
renewable three-year term appointment, teaching
Documentary classes to graduate and undergraduate students, to begin 2010.
Description: Teach in the areas of documentary
studies and production, with an emphasis on
integrating theory and practice; participate in
student advising, admissions evaluations, and
special projects; service on departmental,
divisional, and university committees.
Qualifications: MA/MFA degree in a media-related
discipline or equivalent professional
experience. Significant experience producing
documentaries for public or cable television as
well as independently. Skills as a writer,
director and producer of short and
feature-length documentaries desirable. The
ideal candidate should have technical and
production experience with digital media,
ability to teach cinematography, editing or
directing, familiarity with a diversity of
documentary styles and approaches, and knowledge
of documentary history, theory, research, and
contemporary practice. Demonstrated teaching
excellence and experience in undergraduate
and/or graduate programs Demonstrated
professional accomplishments (awards, grants,
festivals, broadcasts, fellowships, and so on).
Some administrative experience is preferred.
4. Assistant Professor of Media Studies ? Renewable Three-Year Term Appt
Description: The Media Studies Program at The
New School is seeking an Assistant Professor for
a three-year term renewable term appointment to
begin July 1, 2010, with particular expertise in
qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
Responsibilities include teaching in one or more
broad areas in the field of media studies,
including media theory and research; media
education and pedagogy; media ethnography; and
media history. Faculty members advise students,
participate in admissions evaluations and
special projects, and must have the ability and
willingness to serve on departmental, divisional
and university committees. While the position is
primarily dedicated to supporting the graduate
program, opportunities for undergraduate teaching are likely to develop.
Qualifications: Terminal degree in a media
related discipline (Ph.D. preferred);
demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of
academic research; some administrative experience is preferred.
