GROWING UP IN DIVIDED SOCIETIES

CALL FOR PAPERS
The conference aims to bring together scholars
whose work focuses on the experiences of
children who are growing up in ethnically and
politically divided societies. The relative
lack of scholarly attention on the subject
highlights the need to address this from a
variety of disciplinary perspectives, to take
stock of what has been done so far, and to
reflect on the future study of children in divided societies.
We are particularly interested in how children?s
lives are impacted by ethnic and political
divisions and how, in turn, children shape these
societies through their own activity. How are
children implicated in nation-building and how
is childhood co-opted in divided societies for
ideological purposes? How do children partake
in, and respond to, such processes? And how is
their political engagement enabled and
constrained by the social structures and
realities they are confronted with in these societies?
Possible themes for participants to explore in
relation to children and childhood in divided
societies include but are not limited to:
ß Children?s daily lives and their experiences
ß Health impact of growing up in divided societies
ß Representations of children in divided societies
ß Children?s rights in divided societies
ß Constructions of ?us? and ?them?
ß The role of education and schooling and of
other institutions like the family or the media
ß Children?s political and national identities
ß Theories of nationalism and the study of
children and childhood in divided societies
ß Citizenship
ß Immigrants and immigrant children in divided societies
ß Methodological and ethical issues in the study
of children in divided societies
Scholars from any discipline who are working
with either contemporary or historical accounts
of children and childhood in divided societies are welcomed.

Travelling to Queen?s University Belfast
Air
There are two airports serving Belfast:
George Best Belfast City Airport is three miles
from the city centre, connected by rail (Sydenham - Great Victoria Street).
Belfast International Airport is nineteen miles
from Belfast at Aldergrove. A shuttle service
connects with the city centre, operated by Ulsterbus.
Note - Taking a taxi directly from Belfast
International Airport to the University is expensive - approximately £25.

? Dublin is over 160 km south of Belfast but
well connected by rail and bus services.

Road
All ferry ports are well connected by road.
Within Northern Ireland, motorways link Belfast
with the north and the west of the Province, and
the Westlink between the M1 and M2 and a city
ring road make it easy to navigate Belfast's
traffic system. A good road link connects Belfast with Dublin in the south.

Bus
Local bus services within Belfast are provided
by Metro. Long-distance services across Northern Ireland are run by Ulsterbus.
Taxi
Taxis are relatively cheap and easily available.
London-style metered cabs operate from airports
and railways stations: private cabs are
plentiful and can be booked by telephone. Not
all private taxis have meters, so it is
advisable to agree a fare before setting out.
Bicycle
The Main Campus is easily reached from the city
centre (1.5 km) - refer to map.
Bringing a bicycle on public transport: all
ferries accept bicycles, usually free of charge.
Train services will usually accept bicycles;
often a small surcharge is made. Coach services
are generally less willing to carry bicycles,
although it is often discretionary; check first.
The policy of airlines varies a lot, so again check first.
The road system can be busy in and around
Belfast, although pleasant cycling can be found
on the Lagan Towpath (to Lisburn) and in the surrounding countryside.
Bicycle hire is available in Belfast - check with the NI Tourist Board.

A fifteen minute walk from the city centre
