Fri Sep 18 13:02:07 GMT 2009

Open Positions

The College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin seeks to fill three important positions to strengthen its role as the most comprehensive programs of its kind-and one of the nation's foremost institutions for the study of journalism, communication studies, advertising, and radio-television-film.

Director, School of Journalism
-----------------------------------------------------

The School of Journalism is seeking a new director, with an outstanding reputation in either the professional or academic area of journalism. The director will provide vision and intellectual leadership for a program and field in transition, as journalism education adapts to these changes. Thus, a background in both the profession and experience with university life is preferred.

Graduates of the program have won 18 Pulitzer Prizes since its founding in 1914. The School has 850 undergraduates and 120 graduate students in the master's and doctoral programs and offers a comprehensive range of journalism professional training, including programs in print, multimedia, broadcast, and photojournalism. The School has a strong tradition of close relations with the profession and seeks a director who will maintain and expand these ties, working closely with the dean of the College on alumni relations and fundraising for the School. The new director will be appointed as a full professor with tenure and hold the G.B. Dealey Professorship.

Screening of applicants will begin November 1, 2009, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should provide a statement of interest in the position, a complete vita and at least three references to: Prof. Tracy Dahlby, Director and Search Committee Chair; School of Journalism; University of Texas at Austin; 1 University Station A1000; Austin, TX 78712-0113. Faculty posting number: 09091000001.

Senior Professor Position in Journalism
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The School of Journalism invites nominations and applications for a senior scholar with qualifications appropriate for appointment at the rank of tenured full professor, beginning Fall 2010. Interested candidates who are associate professors as well as full professors are encouraged to apply. Candidates' research interests should be relevant to the vital issues of the day concerning journalism, the media, and democratic society, including (1) political communication and public opinion, (2) the changing media political economy, professional roles, and institutional structure, and (3) impact of the emerging new media on citizenship and the public sphere-both nationally and globally. Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in a relevant academic field, a well-established program of nationally recognized research and publication, a commitment to classroom teaching, and record of mentoring doctoral-level graduate students. Other desirable qualifications include the ability to work collaboratively within the School and College, but also with scholars in other disciplines on campus and internationally. Screening of applicants will begin October 15, 2009, and will continue until the position is filled. Send vita, names and contact information of three references, and a statement of interest in the position to: Prof. Maxwell McCombs, Search Committee Chair; School of Journalism; University of Texas at Austin; 1 University Station A1000; Austin, TX 78712-0113. Faculty posting number 09052700001.

Director, Texas Program in Sports & Media
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The College seeks a leader for a newly developed Sports and Media Program, intended to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and research on sports, media and culture. The program will build on existing College strengths in entertainment studies, film, television, new media format, and journalism. One of the nation's best athletic programs at the University of Texas as well as nearby professional sports franchises provide valuable potential partnerships for the program.

The Director will teach one or two courses a year in the general area of sports and media with a concurrent appointment as senior lecturer, oversee a small administrative staff, and help build a program endowment. Oversee development of an Olympic archive, organize an annual symposium on sports and public policy, and provide long-term planning for the Program. Work with faculty members in the College and across campus, generate local and national publicity for the program, and serve as its main ambassador and fund-raiser.

Required: Bachelor's degree. Ten years of experience in the general area of sports and media. Applicants must have a broad vision of the intersection of sports and media in society, well-established relationships with media personnel, and in-depth knowledge of intercollegiate and professional sports. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred: Master's degree. More than 10 years of experience in the general area of sports and media. Experience with start-up operations including concept-design, budgetary oversight, and employee supervision.

Screening of applicants will begin November 16, 2009, and will continue until the position is filled. Go to http://utdirect.utexas.edu/pnjobs/ for complete description and to apply for posting number 09-09-11-01-0379.
