Purchase College SUNY invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position of Media, Society and the Arts (MSA) beginning fall 2010 (subject to budgetary approval). We seek an interdisciplinary colleague with training in anthropology whose research and teaching explore the intersection of media, society and the arts. Courses include introduction to media and cultural studies and visual and ethnographic theories and methods. A description of typical course offerings can be found at: http://www.purchase.edu/Departments/Admissions/AreasofStudy/ProgramPages/mediasocietyandthearts.aspx.

We seek candidates whose areas of specialization might include: artworlds, virtual cultures, embodiment, and subcultures, and/or those whose interests are centered on specific media, e.g., music, film, or new media. Production experience and an interest in teaching methods-based courses are strongly desired. The ideal candidate will have undergraduate teaching experience and be committed to mentoring students, in addition to conducting research. Geographical area is open, but preference will be given to scholars whose work focuses on the Caribbean, Latin America, or Europe. As part of regular duties, the successful candidate will offer courses that contribute to the Anthropology program and the college's general education program. A Ph.D. in anthropology is required by August 2010.
