'Glorious Technicolor, Breathtaking
CinemaScope?: The Spectacle of Technology in Screen Media
Saturday 27th February 2010
University of Warwick
Coventry, UK
CALL FOR PAPERS
This inter- and multi-disciplinary conference
seeks to explore ways in which particular screen
technologies and media are displayed and
spectacularised ? that is, instances in which
attention is drawn to the medium or technology
itself rather than simply to its content.
Technological spectacle is not a new phenomenon
of the digital age but has occurred throughout
the history of the screen arts, perhaps
especially upon the introduction of new
technologies. This conference will investigate
technological spectacle as a possible source of
historical continuity and/or site for difference
? thus working towards a more synthesised,
complete and interdisciplinary understanding of
the long history of screen arts, and the
processes of technological change which
periodically intervene in or develop out of that history.
Papers (20 minutes long) are welcomed which
explore any aspect or case of technological
spectacle in any screen medium. 'Screen?,
?medium? and ?technology? are meant in the
broadest possible senses, encompassing any
historical or current apparatus related to
cinema, television, video/DVD, computer
programs/games, pre-cinematic forms such as the
magic lantern, museum displays, avant-garde forms/uses, etc.
Confirmed speakers include:
* Dr. Alison Griffiths (Department of
Communication Studies, Baruch College, New York)
* Dr. William Boddy ( Department of
Communication Studies, Baruch College, New York)
* Dr. Helen Wheatley (Department of Film and
Television Studies, University of Warwick)
