THE LITERATURE AND PSYCHOANALYSIS CONFERENCE
2005
REPARATION
CALL FOR PAPERS
We invite papers addressing the theme of Reparation, in the realms of
psychoanalysis, literature, culture and politics. In the psychoanalytic
theory developed by Melanie Klein, reparation is considered to be the
central element in our constructive and creative activities. It is now
thought by many to be a more complex and useful concept than Freud's idea
of sublimation. It specifically focuses on phantasies of repairing damage
done to loved ones by our own aggression, imagined or real. Some
psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic critics have argued that works of
artistic creation can be considered as acts of reparation. Others, such as
Leo Bersani in the Culture of Redemption, have argued equally strongly
against this view.
Abstracts of 200-300 words for papers of 30-45 mins duration to should
be received by 1 June, with a working title and a brief biography.
Please send abstracts to Associate Professor Tom Burvill,
Department of Critical and Cultural Studies,
Macquarie University, Sydney,
by email to :
