European Doctoral Summer School in Communication 2005, Tartu, Estonia.
We are happy to invite you to participate in European Doctoral Summer
School in Communication 2005 this time in Tartu, in Estonia on 23rd-28th of
August 2005. The overall theme for the programme will be "Media and
Everyday Life".
The European Doctoral Summer School in Communication 2005 brings together
members of the European research community to summer schools in order to
debate contemporary issues in media, communication and cultural studies.
The programme combines contributions from international experts and junior
scholars, and takes the form of lectures, seminars, presentations, and
workshops. The summer school aims to provide a supportive
international setting where doctoral students can present their ongoing
work and meet students and academics from other countries, establishing
valuable contacts for the future. It also presents the international
landscape of communication and media research, helping the students situate
themselves on it.
The summer school will be in the premises of University of Tartu,
department of media and communication. Summer School fee will cover
participation of the summer school, summer school materials, accommodation,
breakfast, coffee and lunch will be provided for the students. The fee for
the summer school will be 200 euros for consortium member students or
members of the ECCR and who are willing to share a room. With fee 225
euros, people who are neither members of the consortium, nor members of
ECCR. An extra 50 euros will be charged from those who want to live in
single rooms. There are no travel- or other grants.
Each interested student will be expected to send an abstract of their work
(no more than 400 words) and 1 page summary of your PhD project covering
following information:
a. What is your main paradigm?
b. What is your theoretical framework?
c. What are your methods?
d. What is your main objective?
e. How much time have you used, how much time have your left?
by 30th of April to (summerschool /at/ jrnl.ut.ee) Acceptance will be announced by
15th of May. Accepted abstracts will be published on summer school website
and students are expected to find a student paper that they would like to
be respondents to.
By 15th of June accepted students will be expected to:
1. Prepare a 10 page (3000 words) paper
2. Prepare a set of questions (max 1 page) with questions or problems
related to their PhD projects
3. Give their choice of student paper that they would like to be
respondents to.
The paper should be a report of the student.s ongoing doctoral research and
not a conventional conference paper or a report of findings. Rather, it is
expected that the student will briefly present the focus of the research
and then take up aspects of the research process: methodological,
theoretical and practical issues on which he/she would like to receive
feedback.
By the time of the summer school, each student has to prepare a 10-minute
seminar presentation covering the main points of their work.
The number of students will be limited to 2-3 students from each member
university of the consortium. Students whose universities are not members
of the consortium can apply to be part of the programme through European
Consortium of the Communication Researchers (ECCR)
Co-ordinator of the Summer School is researcher Pille Pruulmann-Vengerfeldt
