[eccr] Conference: The Peacock Legacy: 1985-2005

The Peacock Legacy: 1985-2005.
A Conference to be held between 18 -20th March 2005.
First Call For Papers.
In 2005 it will be exactly 20 years since the Committee on Financing of
the BBC was established, Chaired by Sir Alan Peacock. The Report of that
Committee has been widely seen as one of the most influential documents
in post-war communications history. This conference will be structured
around the origins, the conduct and the impact of the Peacock Report,
and will be of interest to students of contemporary political and media
history and policy.
Speakers and participants arranged to date include:
Sir Alan Peacock, Samuel Brittan, David Graham, Lord Brian Griffiths,
Jeremy Hardie, Professor Peter Jay, Sir Quentin Thomas.
The organisers are inviting abstracts on the origins, conduct and impact
of the Committee, areas which may include: the intellectual origins of
the Committee; the political origins of the Committee; public and
critical debate around the Committee; the response of the broadcasters;
the conduct of the Committee; the response of the government to the
report; the intellectual legacy of the report; the reports relationship
to the development of communications policy in the UK.
Abstracts should be no more than 700 words, including references and
institutional affiliation. Please send abstracts to Professor Tom
OMalley, at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies,
University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Parry Williams Building, Penglais
Campus, Aberystwyth SY23 3AJ, or email: (tpo /at/ aber.ac.uk), by 30th
September 2004. The conference will be held at the University of Wales
Residential Conference Centre, Gregynog, near Newtown, Powys. Details of
costs and other arrangements will be circulated in the near future.
