Nikos Smyrnaios is pleased to announce the publication of the book 
entitled The Political Economy of the Public Sphere: From Enlightenment 
to Big Tech, published by Emerald.

In this book, Nikos Smyrnaios examines, with historical depth, the 
tensions and contradictions that run through the public media space. To 
do so, Nikos Smyrnaios critically deconstructs its successive 
conceptualisations throughout history, from the ideals of the 
Enlightenment to the era of propaganda to the « trente glorieuses » and 
the era of late neoliberalism. The author start from the democratic 
ideal to confront the harsh reality of power relations, omnipresent 
under the growing influence of capitalism and the new digital elites.

Nikos Smyrnaios analyses in concrete terms how the commodification of 
information, the platformisation of journalism and the action of 
prescriptive algorithms are reshaping public debate and redrawing the 
boundaries of politics. The author's ambition is – through a materialist 
approach – to offer keys to understanding communication and the media 
not only as a social phenomenon, but above all as a power issue and a 
field of struggle. The idea is to encourage the deconstruction of these 
mechanisms in order to envisage and build concrete political alternatives.
