PhD studentship in Film and Television Studies

Applications are invited for a three-year fees-only PhD studentship for research in Film, Television or Cultural Studies, to be supervised by Dr Will Brooker.

The successful candidate will also hold the post of Editorial Assistant on Cinema Journal, the journal of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, published by the University of Texas Press, during the course of his or her studentship. The journal was launched in 1967 and Dr Brooker will be its first British editor.

This studentship offers a unique opportunity for experience on an internationally-prestigious journal, and will give the successful candidate an unparalleled insight into contemporary film, television and media scholarship.

The studentship is set at a fees-only rate of £3,800 per year (in 2012/13), which includes all editorial duties. Opportunities for additional paid research work or teaching may be available during the tenure of the studentship. Candidates should review the further particulars for the studentship (below). Eligibility criteria

Applicants must hold a good first degree and (preferably) a masters degree in Film, Television, Cultural Studies or a related discipline.

Please note that International students may apply but will be required to provide evidence as to how the remaining part of their fees (£7,300 per year, for three consecutive years) will be paid.

a covering letter, including your contact details and describing your research interests and expertise in research;
a CV;
official transcripts and copies of all degree certificates; and
the names and contact details of 2 referees, to be contacted in the event that your application is short-listed.
Short-listed candidates will be asked to interview for the studentship.

Dates

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 30 June.

Interviews will be held during the third week of July.

The start date of the studentship will be Monday 3rd September 2012.

Further particulars

The selected PhD student will be expected to undertake the following duties for Cinema Journal while also pursuing his or her own research:

Download and process author submissions
Maintain correspondence with authors
Maintain correspondence with readers
Process submission rejections
Maintain correspondence with the UT Press
Maintain Cinema Journal database
Assist in copy editing and proofreading, keeping updated with Chicago Manual of Style
Assist in fact-checking
Upload articles, image files, and author contact information to the press’s FTP site
Other duties as necessary
The PhD student will work closely with Dr Brooker on the journal, and will also be required to take part in the University and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences' training programmes, which will further support the development of his or her research skills (unless exempt by previous training).
