PhD Position at University of Groningen

We are seeking a PhD candidate for the project “Your place is the show: 
A multi-actor analysis of platformised reality TV-induced tourism in 
Asia”. This is a 4-year fully-funded PhD project, in which the PhD 
candidate will explore the phenomenon of screen tourism focusing on 
reality TV, a genre traditionally committed to conserving and presenting 
a sense of authenticity and realness. It focuses on production and media 
ecologies in Asia and approaches them from a multi-actor perspective 
(i.e. creators, local institutional stakeholders, audiences). The 
supervisory team is intentionally not specifying the geographical scope 
of this PhD project. This will be narrowed down based on the expertise 
and interest of the PhD candidate.

The PhD project will be embedded at the Research Center for Media and 
Journalism Studies in Faculty of Arts at University of Groningen in The 
Netherlands. You will be working under the supervision of Dr. Deborah 
Castro (co-promoter), Dr. Qian Huang (co-promoter), and Prof. Marianne 
Franklin (promoter).
