Job: Assistant Professor Journalism and New Media
Leiden University is looking for a:
Assistant Professor Journalism and New Media starting 1 August 2022
(1,00 FTE)
Key responsibilities
• Teaching and developing BA and MA level courses in the Journalism
and New Media track of the Media Studies program in Leiden (in Dutch)
and The Hague (in English);
• Mentoring student internships and liaising with media and news
organizations;
• Conducting research in the field of journalism studies (especially
new media) and supervising BA and MA dissertations;
• Assisting in the development of research proposals and in the
execution of research projects;
• Providing academic service to staff and students in the JNM degree
programs.
Selection criteria
• A PhD in the research field of Linguistics, Journalism Studies,
Communication Studies or Discourse Studies;
• Broad expertise in teaching and researching journalism theory and
practice;
• In-depth knowledge of the most recent developments in new media,
social media, and media innovations;
• In-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods
and techniques;
• Preferably: Experience with courses in visual language and video
journalism; Experience with running news desks in journalism training
(project management skills);
• Proven didactic qualities (teaching evaluations);
• You have a proven track record of research, as demonstrated by a
list of peer-reviewed publications commensurate with career stage;
• Excellent communication skills, preferably both in Dutch and English.

The Faculty of Humanities has seven Institutes, among which the Leiden

of the world’s languages and features unique linguistic expertise.
Current theoretical insights are combined with modern experimental
methods in its research profile area ‘Language Diversity in the World’.
Terms and conditions
We offer a temporary appointment of one year. This position may lead to
a permanent appointment depending on good performance.
Salary range from €3821.- to €5230.- gross per month based on fulltime
employment and commensurate with qualifications and experience. (pay
scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch
Universities).
Depending on qualifications, you may start at the appropriate step in
scale 10 until you fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified
by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to the number of
years of relevant work experience.
